Vortex — Original Abstract Acrylic Painting by Jasmina Mendoza

Vortex is an original abstract acrylic painting created by Jasmina Mendoza in 2023 on a 40 x 60 cm canvas panel. It began with a warm background of golden yellow and orange, built up using brushes. I then experimented with pouring, letting the paint find its own direction. The result wasn't what I had planned, but the unexpected movement became the heart of the painting.

A twisting shape rises through the centre, surrounded by marks that seem to scatter, spin and fall. Deep charcoal, white and metallic-looking gold tones contrast with the glowing background, giving the work a sense of energy and depth.

I used painting knives, scrapers and brushes to pull, spread and layer the acrylic paint, especially across the lower part of the panel. Some areas are smooth and atmospheric; others hold thick marks, scratches and delicate details.

Vortex is a contemporary abstract painting about experimentation and allowing something surprising to emerge. It invites viewers to decide for themselves what is rising from the colours and textures, and where that movement might lead.
